THE YARD:
Exhibition For The Peculiar Patriot
September 13 - December 17, 2017
REDEFINING CULTURE THROUGH ART
In anticipation of the World Premiere of The Peculiar Patriot, NBT did a dramaturgical lobby exhibition that took one of the play's thematics focuses to create The Yard. This interactive exhibition that explores the impact of the mass incarceration system on Black women and how it impacts the family.
"Mothers in prison serve a “dual sentence,” because they spend their time locked up worried about their children’s well-being. Perhaps nowhere is the ripple effect of incarceration more apparent or troubling than on the families left behind.14 A staggering 1.3 million children have mothers who are incarcerated in the U.S. Incarcerated mothers often experience clinical depression and related trauma as a result of being removed from their children.15 Similarly, children typically suffer emotional and psychological harm because of such separations."
